Attempts with those didn't even prepare me for: between flights on an ultralight, trying on request to coax a 15mm-plastic tube framed, standoff-less <1m delta into the air. I'm pretty sure i had a play-tent as a kid made of the same stuff!

Yeah, had a similar situation when Dad was shouting at Son who was unable to stop nose-planting a toy stunt kite. I politely suggested that the lad may do better if he was permitted to let the lines out to a few times more than the 5 metres he had -- the mouthful of abuse I got!

You must realise it's an ego thing!

Don't go there unless invited
All that matters in life is kite flying, love and work ….preferably in that order.

In the bag; Shhhhh... far too many to mention, don't tell the Missus!

Flic-flacking & cascading the STx today quite happily....
Bloke walks over and says "excuse me"
I pop out my headphones and say "Worry, what?"
Bloke "How do you do that?"
Me "pull this line *moves hand* then this one"
Bloke "No fly when there's no wind!"

I light up a ciggy and blow out, smoke moves just
Me "There's enough wind to fly this kite"
Him "No there isn't"
Me "It's magic then!"

At least three times over the weekend I was asked if the kites flying in EuroCup were remote controlled.

Lady sitting next to us at Margate said the same thing (radio controlled), followed by "I feel such a fool" when the binoculars were offered.

What is it about the word KITE that means people cannot associate STRING with it?

Two options for me next time:
1/ I filled the frame with helium
2/ They're not strings but super fine rods so I can push it around the sky

#2 definately got my vote. Pure hilarity.

Hope this thread never grows stale. I find it quite amusing, and check it everyday...

 ...if they look really gullible try "it's made out of anti-gravity fabric".

Woman with lad approaches me on the beach for help with a cheap 'eddy':

"His uncle put it together.......the instructions weren't very clear"

and hands me a bridle-less kite with the flying line formidably knotted around the middle of the spine.

(p.s. I sent 'em away to unpick the knot and after setting up the supplied bridle it did fly :) )

As I'm unhitching the lines from my gem a fellow approaches and asks the most pertinent question yet:

"How have you rigged your kite to flip backwards like that?"

I did try to explain about the nature of trick-kites and recommended FA as the place where the more accomplished congregate.

I was having a break on one our rare std-wind days, when the kid next to me thudded his power kite into the grass yet again. Dad ran over, unwrapped the lines by rotating the kite (how else would you do it?) and let the kite take to the air. So far so good. He then walks directly back towards the kid, who was frantically trying to control the thing.

His reward was a highly tensioned line across the side of his face, just under his eye.
Fork me, I thought, he is going to go wild.

No chance. He remained perfectly calm, touched his cheek with a tissue, and trotted off to a safe distance behind his offspring.

I was well impressed by his self-control (but not by his risk analysis)

Granddad, who was also there, did a proper job the next time, and walked back at a well safe radius.
