Brighton Kite Festival 12th & 13th July 2008 @ Stanmer

Tue Jul 01, 2008 2:57 pm

I just thought I'd add this to the list.

I certainly hope to be there and hope I can remember how to fly too, it's been so windy for the last ... em longer that I can remember, that I've not been able to fly this year yet. Every free day has been too windy. I'm beginning to think I need to dust off my foils just to get some flying done.
MyKites - That is not dead that can eternal lie, yet in strange aeons this damn kite might fly.

Ah the Brighton wind is indeed a challenge.

I'll be there, probably even if it rains. Maybe not if it really rains.

I was there yesterday afternoon (the racecourse site is really overgrown). The wind was a bit bumpy but flyable. As long as it comes from somewhere South it should be OK.

Today / tomorrow looks a bit pants for wind and weather, so I'll just be doing a day trip on Sunday (Bloody long day trip, but less hassle than doing the whole caravan thing for the weekend).

Jaffa Cake Cup around lunch time and TO in the arena after?

Nice day out as usual...

3 hrs there in the morning, and 5 hours back in the evening - sheesh. (missed Top Gear)

They always do a great job of the festival though, plenty of traders, reasonable food stalls (even if you did have to queue) plenty of interested spectators, and we had a strong turnout as well. Great to see y'all.

Sunday TO results...

Rnd1

Roy Reed vs Carl Robertshaw - Carl progressed

Rnd 2

Pete (711) Johnson vs Stephen Tonkin - Pete progressed

Rnd 3

Piero Serra vs James Robertshaw (with a rev.) - Piero progressed

Rnd 4

Bryan Beasley vs Chris Goff - Chris progressed

Semi Final 1

Carl vs Pete - Carl Progressed

Semi Final 2

Piero vs Chris - Piero progressed

Final

Carl vs Piero - Carl wins

Really high standard of competition throughout this one. Great job guys.
Sublime comentary from Craig in the absence of any vicars or donkeys -thanks Craig, and the whole thing is on film thanks to the steady hand of Doug e superfly. Thanks also Hezz and Fella (?) for ground crew duties. I'll edit the film together tonight.

Sunday Jaffa Cup.

15  fliers (though Paul (1969) was on a promise and had to get gone leaving 14) with 10 Jaffa's each. Comments on this on t'other thread...

1 Jaffa - Neil Martin (DanteUK)

2 Jaffa - Jason Winter (harsh), Stephen Tonkin (with bonus for fancy footwork)

4 Jaffa - Rob P (Fiction), Pete (711) Johnson

5 Jaffa - Roy Reed, Craig Hibbert, Enzo Serra

7 Jaffa - James Robertshaw (with a .85)

And so to the top 5...

10 Jaffa - Al Tanner

12 Jaffa - Bryan Beasley

15 Jaffa - Carl Robertshaw

33 Jaffa - Piero Serra

35 Jaffa - Chris Goff

Again, really high standard throughout. A bit tough to maintain concentration / interest and remember what happened 25 performances ago, but great fun none-the-less and a fantastic turnout.

Ranking points on the way...

Bryan

That be Stewart :D

It looked good from where we were, even when Carl decided to land a Fury on my head  and poor Stewart had to do most of the running around as there was next to no wind on the left hand side of the arena and everyone on that side got tip wraps (except the other Mr Robertshaw of course... hmm a Rev in a trick comp, unusual... )

Piero was the star of the show (IMHO), very impressive mostly due to the sheer range and style of his tricks. Nice to see that trick comps are growing in popularity. I think the 30-second trick out format works well for an audience.

Didn't get to watch the Jaffa Cake Cup as was too busy trying to fly my DS amongst the foils and newbies up the hill...

Well done to everyone (including the commentators, that's a hard job!)

Sorry I missed the TO, not accustommed to competitions so early in the day.... The Jaffa Cake Cup was great fun though, with the wind being about as good as it can be at Stanmer Park. Indeed a harsh mark there for Jason - I think some of us were giving Jaffa points for kite altitude. Good to see you all!
