South Wales fliers

Wed Aug 05, 2020 2:38 am

Are there any fliers in South Wales area who meet up at any time. Used to be a few fliers on Cowbridge Common years ago, but that tailed off.

Funnily enough, I stumbled across a post last week about that topic....a twelve year-old post.

Must be a fair few quiet solo fliers about (such as myself) and a fair collection of kites gathering dust,I suspect.

That was interesting, shame the flying up the common tailed off, I did used to enjoy the trips up there, I wasn’t a regular but did manage a couple of days a month. I also raced model yachts, and that took over really.
I have recently wonder if a local kite shop would work, it couldn’t be a shop as such, would have to be online, don’t think kiting would support rent and rates etc. I think most kite shops went down the line of power kites and kite surfing, They dropped the stunt kites and single line stuff due to lack of interest. there are a few specialising in powerkites, but not many on the smaller stuff.

I moved away a few years ago now, Jim sold all his kites (I bought 2 of them) and not sure what the other guys did/do. Vee and keith still compete AFAIK

Not compete, but still heavily involved in STACK, and still flying ( not so much this year obviously).
But we moved from Cardiff a decade ago for my job, living in Northants now.

Just stumbled upon this thread from the newish Fractured Axel Facebook group. Haven’t viewed this forum or flown a kite in years and one of the first posts I see is one about my local flying venue.

I used to fly Cowbridge Common and arranged some Better Flying Days there. However it went very quiet and I was spending most of my free time in Pembrokeshire where we had a holiday home so the kites stayed down there. Sold that a few years back and now in first week of retirement so those kites may at last get chance to come out of the attic and take to the sky’s again. Bet I’m really rubbish now, I was never that good when I practiced all the time :D

@Tregolwyn nice to be getting some feedback on here, I also suffer from holiday homeitus ours is in Herefordshire, otherwise I would try frequenting Cowbridge Common or somewhere similar and try to resurect the kite scene in South Wales. COVID at the moment is actively trying to put paid to any social gatherings, and I think there will be a fair few clubs of various descriptions, which operate in the open air, start to fail due to low attendances, with COVID restrictions, so it would probably be virtually impossible to form a club, or regular gathering of kite enthusiasts at this time. I will keep visiting the forum and hope in the future we see a return to something like this.
