Tricky Wiki

Mon Jul 10, 2006 7:17 am

Following the discussion here I think we should try and get this Wiki going.

I think Peter Peters' site is the best place to start from as there's a long-established (if slightly dated) list of tricks there with input from some of the top trick flyers around.

We still need to establish a concrete format for each page, but Rob's suggestion:

I would propose the various sections for each "trick"

Description of the trick, including possible origins, diferent styles of execution, and possibly modifications to the trick (i.e. for a 540 make sure to mention, and link to, slot machines, yo-yo 540's, yo-yo slotmachines, 900's etc..)

Description of execution, split into subtypes for different executions on different kites.

Description of design features of a kite that enhance or detract from the kite's ability to do the trick.

Video reference linking to videos with time of the trick

Tutorial links

References (necassary for origin certainly among other things)

Links to other websites of discussion.

To which I replied:

I suggested using PP's list as a well established list of tricks (up to a point) with some very experienced people's input. Rob's layout looks good, but I'd move the possible origins, different styles and modifications to the end, along with design features of kites. Most users will just want the basics, which is what PP's list already contains in the majority of cases.

So, using all this as a starting point, let's see what can be done as a community.

You will need to PM me to set you up as an editor of the Wiki.

If you haven't seen a Wiki before, then I suggest that one of the largest and most famous is Wikipedia so have a look at that for ideas on formatting (each page, we're not really talking about the portal aspect of the front page yet,) and layout etc.

Also, I'm not leading this (just hosting and admin for now), it's a community thing, so you need to decide on a format and layout together.

Id think different style of execution would be important, ESPECIALLY for beginners since it seems to be a big problem for many beginners to try and learn a trick they were shown on one kite, and attempting to execute on a kite that does not do it the same way.

I'd also think it'd be important to include that lumped with the rest due to different authorship. The initial trick description could end up being heavily biased towards the style that the initial author's kite does that trick. I think it'd be important that other authors be able to add such important information without requiring a complete re-write each time, and simply be able to make addendums
Anyway this cake is great.
It's so delicious and moist

Hmm.. currently people can't edit, even when they're in the right groups. I'll have to have a look (probably should read the documentation )

I have the editing thing sorted out now. Permissions will need refining as we progress, I think. For the moment the Editors group has what it needs to update a page which is good enough for starters.

Rob and Ian - I had to reset your user accounts, so you both have new passwords - check your PMs.

The TP US definitions would be useful. Ron and Stephanie let me use them on my Tricks pages and I'm sure they'd say it was OK for the Wiki too if asked.

Could a link to the wiki be added to those at the top of FA pages?

Good idea.. I have made enquiries. I think the TP defs would be best in a box-out labelled as such.

Could a link to the wiki be added to those at the top of FA pages?

Yep, when I remember how to do it ;)
