VF11 - the middle eight

Fri Jan 23, 2009 12:47 pm

By my reckoning there is just 3½ more weekends to go. If you haven't got a suitable video sorted yet, time to get busy with that.

Just to remind you... Talon UL. Seriously, if you need more incentive than that what are you doing on this forum ?

To give us all something to aspire to, here's another promo. video showing us all how it's done.

Fourth entry now received.

A coupla' things:-

flying outside the video frame is OK up to the "don't take the piss" stage. It almost definitely isn't helping you but it's up to everyone to decide if it hinders you. Better if you stay in, certainly, but I'm taking a relaxed but not ignoring it approach if that's OK with people.

GMail has increased the maximum size of attachments to 20Mb (sort of...) and Thomas has supplied plenty of webspace to host them.

There's a running total on the website of how long this is all going to take. Currently no n00bies have submitted anything so.....

Panic ye not...

The "for use in emergency" entry has been binned, with a better effort now in the can (the flying is still crap, but at least the film is in focus!). I'm just doing some final editing and playing about with formats, but its safe to say, this particular n00b is very definately IN.

Oh and in case you're worried, the kite never leaves the frame *... \:D/

* Well it's never completely off screen at least!

A mere ten days to go. Six people currently in with a shot at a Talon UL. Can you live with yourself if you missed out on this chance (answer: no, you can't) ?

Suitable footage recorded. Won't win, but still a shot at the Talon.

Quick intermediate Q:

I've received a couple of 40Mb+ videos. Are people happy DLing files this size (currently the 9 videos entered would run to 133Mb) or should I keep them reasonable (ie; less than that) ? I squished one to 14Mb and there's not a great deal of difference. For me it's no biggie as we have storage and bandwidth (he said, tempting fate). It does mean that the difference between a high quality DL and a YouTube video is enormous. There's one that's 5192kb/s, 50fps and 1280x720 that looks  with a hint of

Thoughts on the subject please.

So... if you have a total of 133Mb, and two of them are over 40Mb each, it means the others are sensibly small. Seriously, is there a lot of point in a video of this size? After all, it's a flying contest isn't it???

But I'm just a n00b so I'll go with the flow, and there's no problem for me personally DLing big files - just press OK and walk away for a while... Might be nice to have a YouTube option on the big ones though, for people with slower/less stable download links...

Just read that out of context after spending the afternoon staring at spars and sails. Is it a new trick to get the spars out of the LE tunnels during flight? I'd like to see the recovery to normal flight

Ha !

Been working on it for a while now... During flight, I only ever seem able to get the frame out in small pieces, and have yet to achieve any kind of recovery (from anything)... Be a helluva trick though don't you think?

Speaking as one of the large file size offenders, I'd say a more reasonable size sounds good. The video quality of previous VFs is certainly acceptable for the purposes of the competition.

I'll work on learning how to compress my files in the future: I'm just now a bit behind on my video technology.
