New to kites - Worth Building?

Wed Aug 17, 2005 6:43 pm

Have played with mates kites in the past now I want one of my own

Question is:

I'm an nqt and hence totally skint, what's the cheapest way into the sport? I used to do some sail-making which I assume is simmilar so my current plan is to make a rev style quad - any thoughts?

Theres a few plans on the net regarding plans for Revs, i think theres one called a "something" 2000 (can't remember what it's called, but has 2000 in the title) there is also bridle sites as well..just a case of doing some research on the net really, it's all availible to you!
I have made a Rev before it's far cheaper than the real ones, a couple of metres of materiel and about 10 metres of bridling, and some skyshark rods and your away..i reckon about £45 -£60 whole lot.
Plus line and hand made handles........and a lot of practise!!!!

If you've made boat sails you'll be amazed how easy kitemaking can be. A Freedom 2000 is a perfect first project.

My first homemade was a Cassiopeia quad (a small rev clone) when I was unemployed, and I've made countless kites since then.

Some spinnaker scraps, spars and endcaps and you're set. The LE screen strip isn't really needed, but a bit of window screen will do.

Get your feet under the table
Start a kite club for the kids
Ask for funding from Head or PTA.. get equipment for flying or making
Write to manufacturers traders to see if they will help
Have fun.

I did all these.

Flexifoil sent me loads of off cuts with whcih we made kites with the kids, Kids brought real fighers back from india, fun was had by all.

BUT.. get the day job done first!

I'm guessing - possibly a newly qualified teacher - can anyone confirm that?

nqt = newly qualified teacher = loadsa money ( potentially ) = loadsa flying time = therefore stretch the plastic and go and buy a REV1.5 and start flying now :D if you make a kite it will be winter and according to my daughter you will be working really long hours for very little pay and hardly any free time :(
