Unfortunately, no. The ones that you gave us didn't survive the winter in the greenhouse.

I'm sure I've seen them here in Tescos, also pickled.

May have been Scotch Bonnet which are flippin' hot. My favorite from Tesco are Bird's Eye, fruity and very hot.

Nicest chilli I've had recently was some dried, smoked ones that a friend brought back from Tanzania. Extremely hot, but incredible flavour.

Last year was a bust...only the prairie fire grew fruit.

This time I have some Purple Tiger, Ancho and having another pop at the peach habs.

Can you tell me why she rubbed the chillies into her eyes? Is this part of the chilli addict's hit?

Capsacin is still pretty poorly understood, esp. pertaining to it's specific effects on the brain.

Some studies say it does little or nothing, while others claim it can directly or indirectly induce endorphin release. Hmmm....

But either way, it must have burned her eyes tremendously. For the eyes to feel GOOD, she would likely need a mutation in some protein in the peripheral 'pain' system.

This would explain why she was eating peppers when the rest of the children were 'looking for berries'.

I don't know, but I imagine it was to generate an endorphine hit so as to distract from the pain in her mouth.

(As I think I've mentioned before, chilli-in-the-eye is a remarkably effective -- if briefly bloody painful -- cure for the I-want-to-scratch-my-eyes-out itch from hay-fever.)

That's interesting to know that. I wonder if it will have a similar effect on the nasal hay-fever "itching"?

I've been meaning to ask if anyone here makes chilli oil? i.e. chop up some chillies into a bottle of oil, then use the oil in dishes, over pizza etc. What oil and chillies should I consider?

Oh yes, my habanero oil was violently hot. Use a drop or two at most. I refilled* that jar many many times and the heat level didn't diminish.

I've mentioned it before but the prairie fireare perfect for this.

What Rob said re chilli oil.

I don't know about the nasal itch (hay-fever doesn't make my nose itch, merely makes me sneeze), but it probably will work, given that we're dealing with the effect of capsaicin on mucous membrane in both cases. You could always test it and report back here :-) .
