I think the Hario says that you appreciate simple design well thought out design .... or maybe you have a meth lab.

So you're half right

I have seen some old versions of these. Does it make good coffee?

Ridiculously well refined. Better even than my metal filtered Aeropress in just eliminating any trace of bitterness but it does change the character of the more... lively... beans. And it's brewed coffee, not espresso. It is hugely entertaining to use though.

I must be lucky, I can make perfect coffee at home now. Locally roasted beans, and an AWESOME sunbeam machine. :-)

I have lusted after their lever machines for years and even took a class in how to drive one. It's such a fantastic way to make something but I've stuck with their Espresso Inn Lusso pump machine until such time as I completely lose all self control

So it seems self control is over-rated :?

The combination of money in my PayPal account from selling kites, this thread and a little spare time at work to find a cheap..... cheaper..... one lead me to this sorry state of affairs.

I regret NOTHING !!!!!!

I see Mike resisted the eagle, but not the (unnecessary) pressure gauge. Nevertheless, have fun!
Where do we go now, grinders or beans ??

What's the entry-level budget on these espresso machines in the UK without buying a complete dud?

I toyed with all this some time ago - you need a decent grinder too ... something like this bundle

or better yet

Costs more than my missus wanted to let me spend at the time.

Good grief - that's about 3 kites.

Never try to rationalise capital purchases (kites, coffee machines, cars, ..., lego sets, yoyos, etc)
Just economise a bit until you can afford it,

Just as it comes

Grinders - Zassenhaus for the masochist/purist, any motor driven burr type for those without a registerable mental health condition.
Beans - variety is the spice of life.

Much like audio equipment or carbon spars you can spend silly amounts of money for marginal~debatable gains in the end product but, depending on the individual, it might just make them very happy.

This is worth watching

All the machines are interesting - the Rok looks great ... but its spendy compared to the Aeropress (which I've just ordered).

They call it the Otto. Pretty but I'd rather have a proper espresso machine for less money

The rancilio is the best grinder . Good grinding and fresh beans are probably the most underrated parts in making a proper cup of coffee

Resurrecting this thread ... just started a new job and they have a Rocket Giotto here:

The grinder looks like a serios piece of kit too - I've not yet tried them out - for fear of making a tit of myself.
