2oz ripstop polyester.

Thu Apr 18, 2019 12:07 am

Hi had my sewing machine few weeks now been following NMkG builds.(Brill).
Looking at getting things together for my first kite so pricing up items required + wondered if anybody used/thoughts on 2oz(60grm)
polyester ripstop on Ebay from china? Just think at £2.69 a yard is it worth a try or will the increase in weight make it unworkable?
Also does anybody know supplier of mylar tape for reinforcing spine + standoffs?
Your feedback would be very much appreciated.

I haven't used 2oz fabric to be honest but i did get a few (free!!!!) samples from
http://www.ebaystores.co.uk/iwantfabrics
and it looked pretty good for the price,  good for a first build (imo) where it's hard to justify the comparatively huge price tag of Icarex. I am using the 48g stuff myself and it suits my purposes well.
For spine reinforcement i use a clear reinforced tarpaulin (you'll find tons on ebay) just get the lightest you can find. For standoffs ..you can always use dacron.
Im no expert but hope this helps :)

Hi Ian, been following NMkG Builds your Le Quartz Build and links to Toms Kite building site all full of info. You may detect trying to do so on budget as cost of some items are very prohibitive?
Will be spreading cost over next few months as trying to build buying list (item, cost, supplier).

It's amazing how the cost for all the bits and pieces soon mounts up !
Good Luck and keep us posted !

Hi Ian, been trying to keep cost down (tightwad) have ordered ripstop 1.5oz(china) + everything else i can from Ebay. Carbon tube + rod also connecting kit (for parts) not centre T from Decathlon(click+collect). This means even with 5pt,s.Will be making my 1st kite at around £65(this is taking into account not using all material + only 3 ends caps (10 pack) etc.
So if you or anybody else knows how to keep costs down as I have found it very difficult to source some parts almost down
to just one or none (mylar tape).

many thanks.

Many Thanks Roy, just sourced Crossweave Filament Fibreglass Reinforced Tape. Just a thought for anyone on builds purchased 80mm dacron + carefully cut 50mm strip for leading edge + 30mm strip for trailing (tightwad).
