Some questions about InnerSpace

Wed Sep 18, 2013 9:46 pm

Hi all, I have three questions about InnerSpace:
1) The kite is quite oversteering: how can I fix it?
I fly with the IS only outdoor, from zero wind (6 mt lines) to near nowind to 6-8 km/h (15 mt lines).
It is always oversteering.
I've tried modifying the bridle as suggested by Andy Wardley (http://wardley.org/kites/reckites/benso ... ridle.html),
but hadn't significant improvements.
Did anyone experience the same problem?
2) What is the wingspan of your assembled kite from tip to tip: 230 cm like reported on Benson site (http://www.bensonkites.com/kites/innerspace.html) or less (214 cm for my IS)?
3) Is the trick line really necessary?
Thank you
Stefano

Fly it indoors or outdoors in truly zero wind on short lines (5m). It's not meant to be a regular SUL and doesn't fly like one. It has been used as such but you'd need to make some pretty major changes to the bridle.

3) Is the trick line really necessary?

No but without it the trailing edge is quite vulnerable if your thin lines get into contact with it.

Thank you Mike.
I know, IS is not a SUL, but I fly inland in wind from zero to low SUL conditions.
I know also that IS is not a trick kite: no problems, i like fade, axel and so on, but the oversteering is a problem.
So , what are the changes of the bridle that You suggest?

I suggest you write to Tim. He may have a suggestion about the bridle.

I also use my inner space mainly outdoors, but I dont get oversteer, in fact I have flown STACK figures in next to no wind.

If your trick line pulls the wing tips in when fitted then either try it without, or make a longer one. I agree that the trailing edge will get worn without a trick line, but you wont be doing lazy susans much anyway !

Mine doesn't have the trickline fitted either, and I don't get a problem with oversteer either - take it off and go fly it!

Thanks to all
@Tony: how long are your lines for outdoor?

25 m for general fun, 40m for proper figures when you need some room to fly in. If the team kites don't work then the inner space comes out !

Hi Tony,
much longer lines than those recommended by Tim!!!
Are your bridles still originals?
Thank you, Stefano.

If you two team flyers won't admit "oversteer", would you at least allow "very sensitive" ?

Well I don't suppose Tim is advocating using an Innerspace to fly STACK figures ...

Yes, "very sensitive" covers it. It's why I fly it without straps - just with the sleeved loops around my thumbs and first two fingers - it seems to help me use much smaller inputs.

Another thing - my IS is quite old, with a frame of various Avia rods I think, and the fittings are just vinyl endcaps with extra holes punched in them. I believe newer ones have different frames and actual proper fittings - might that cause a slight difference in flight characteristics?

My kite does have the extra leg at the centre t, otherwise standard with Avia skinnys. I would say it takes small movements to make it turn, but I wouldn't describe it as oversteery - once you have drive, it will return to a straight line with a snap if you tell it to.

If anyone has an Avia inner space, I could do with another for pairs fly or die days ....

My InnerSpace is SkyShark 2pt all framed (upper spare 4mm). I also fly with no straps, only the sleeved loops.
Does the extra leg make it more nose down? More long the extra leg and MORE OR LESS OVERSTEERING?
Tim answered me to move the towpoint more outboard by 1 or 2 cm, but how can I do?
There is no regulation on the inhaul.....: have I to short the activator?
Thank you for any input.

We also fly our two (2pt-framed) ISs as a pair when the wind is too light for anything else (as it was today ...):

We use 35m lines, 20lb. Works fine, except for refuelling (which cuts the line quickly; dacron rubbing against the line creates enough of a temperature to melt them right through!)

Yes, they're sensitive to input, but I wouldn't say oversteer-y. They track well, and you can easily fly (STACK) figures, including sharp(-ish) corners, once you get used to the small input that's needed.
