building a Vendetta SUL

Wed Sep 11, 2013 9:49 pm

I'm building a Vendetta SUL for mister Kiteclique: Frazer.
I got the templates from a secret source. Building this kite is to complete Frazer's set. And I think it is valid, because Vipersportkites stopped building kites (sadly). I'm not making money, by the way.
And no, I'm not building more Vendetta's for other persons and also the templates remain secret. (I can build an other kite if you want...)

In this thread I will put some pictures of the build.
We already agreed on a panellayout and colors, I ordered all the materials (I think the stuff will arrive on friday).

Tonight I taped all the A4's of paper together to create the separate panels and the half of the sail:

The panellayout will be a bit more Vendetta-ish, but the centre V (characteristic for the Vendetta) will not be there. You'll see that in the next update.

This was very easy to do. Tape the two outer panels together and just make a new cut.
I have to be careful to remember there is no addition for the seam on that cut!

Now I have to wait for the Icarex.

This kite has been top of my wish list forever. Shawn had made an SUL which we all liked (us Vendetta fliers that is) only to find out he could
no longer source the sail material. So he switched back to Icarex but he wasn't happy with the results and alas the design was never finalized.

I fly at an inland competition every year, ODSKC in Richmond, VA and my Vendetta UL is often a little too heavy for the winds there.
Hence my jonesing for a SUL version all these years.

I'm grateful to Krijn for building me one and to the secret source of the secret plans. 8)

Sail sewn, both halfs attached together, trailing edge, leechline, dacron reinforcement. Going well.

Oops. I made a mistake. After attaching the two leading edges, one was with the holes for the apa's at the back of the sail...
I took it of:

And did it right the second time (new piece of spinnakertape, so my mistake will be hidden forever):

Nose also done, so stitchwork is ready.

i like the pattern and color choice will be eye-catching in air, white looks very good on the sky.

I enlarged the hole in some tiny-Apa's. I took a few tries how to do this in the best way.
24 hours in the freezer and a 8mm-drill!

Rubbish:

But it worked.

Frame is in.

Sorry no picture of the kite. I always hate the pictures of a framed sail without the bridle.

There is a much easier way to get them fit onto SkyShark P spare. Just put them into hot water for some time. This will make them more flexible.

Build is ready:

Not ready for sending it to Frazer. First I'll have some flights to check it.
That may take a (long) while. Windy here lately.

(Tomorrow I'll put it on the kitchen scale.)
