Replacing Talon 2 spars

Mon Aug 19, 2013 6:27 pm

Well we took the talon 2 Standard out that I bought my other half for his bday first flight and well the thing barley and I mean barley touched the floor and the lower leading edge spar has snapped.

So cheesed off, as you look at the kite it's the very bottom right corner spar that had snapped about 10inched up? This is the lower leading edge Spar am I correct?

Is this a common thing? I really didn't think it would be that easy to snap a spar.

Just wanted to confirm before we get a replacment :(

That is the lower leading edge (LLE).

No its not common to break a spar ... but the LLE would be the one to break (when shit does happen)

The spars are made my SkyShark and are very tough as a rule.

The Talon specifications are up on the website: http://www.jestofevekites.com/talon_std.htm

The good news is - the fix is simple and quick and won't cost much - chin up :)

I don't mean to sound unsympathetic - but this is much more likely to be user error than any issue with the spar or kite.

Was the kite correctly assembled ? Was the line / bridle wrapped around the wingtip etc, etc.

Hey, yeah It was all correctly assembled.

Do you think we will just need to order the lower leading edge spar, should not need to order any other pieces should we?

I would contact Mark directly, looking at your picture the spar looks to be a P200/300 whereas on the specs page it says 5PT.

and normally associated when you pull too hard on the line when it's tip wrapped.

Yeah, yeah, whatever ... we don't believe you Image

You got your free replacement spar ... I don't understand why you keep dribbling on and on about it.

Helen's broken spar looks like a Black Diamond Nitro which is what Mark was fitting to Talons when this particular kite was built.

It's a very stiff spar without much give and I've had one go just below the LS APA without feeling I'd overloaded it.

The chances of it being a bad run of Skyshark on two different spar types over four or so years is next to negligible.
