Single line tricks - put here as I dont know where else it

Mon Jul 11, 2011 10:15 pm

This may get me banned from a trick kite forum but I am talking about Wala (and possible Horvath/fighters) . . .

Just spent a couple of hours playing with my Wala (winds were no good for Shadow - zeroish to 2mph with odd gusts rather higher) and it was 20% amazing and 80% frustrating - so I am after some tips please

Some of the issues were down to the wind admittedly - on a few occasions the wind lifted and kite just powered up, went to the edge of the wind window and hit the deck. But when it was good it was amazing, just floating peacefully around with barely a nudge to change direction - truly magical

I tend to fly with 30ft of line or so out and let it gather on the floor as I draw in and run through my fingers as it draws out (got some burns tonight on the gusts) but still cant seem to get it to fully rotate. I wondered about using fighter line and reel but that doesnt seem like a good answer as the weight of the dacron helps with the glide/control

anyone else fly a Wala and get it doing good stuff ?

There has been a fair amount of interest in these tricky single-liners, so no ban-hammer. If there's enough response I'll create a single-line section.

Why not! I arse about with Indian fighters and de-tailed Gunther butterflies (the notion of a butterfly fight is perversely appealing), and am trying to persuade SWMBO that an urban ninja is essential.

There are a good number of these active UL single line kites out there.....
If you are looking to make your own there is the Urban Ninja and variants, Ginga from Belgium.
If you are looking for more static but also gliders Focus Designs has the Skate and Manta *production is on hold right now.

Will Sturdy is also making a Chiroptera gliding kite.

If you are looking for a different shape check out the Marconi/platz variants like the Blue Moon 61/49 and the Plutz gliders from ceewan.

Karl and Sara have those terry-dactyls too....love these guys......

Robert Van Weers of NZ makes the Vapid - a cool shaped static flyer

Flying wings has the Wala, WalaXL and Laima

There are some great ones coming out of south east asia like the Migi series....

R-sky makes the Bird'x (I highly recommend this), the shift (not as highly recommended.... :( ) and used to make the Boul'x (static 3d kite...very neat)

Windfire designs offers up their Morpho Grande at an outrageous price...but the kite is sweet....

Just a few options.....

good winds

thanks thief, its getting to be a good long list of choices

couple more I have come across are
Bai Kite
Oisseau (by Ramial Tien)
Windfire mini serendipity

Finding this stuff in UK seems more of a challenge

Wonder if Mac fighters would have a ready market Mac modified his traditional fighters to be more like these . . .

My top tip so far is moving around on the ground so as NOT to be in line with the spine. So if I pull Wala overhead I now step to the left or right and as the kite glides over my head I can coax it in the direction I just went. Not moving about meant I was always behind the spine and since Wala doesnt spin like a fighter I just flew into the ground . . .

Really ? Mine's a bit static and seems happy that way. Their Zero Wind Glider moves about nicely though. Also Nick James' Angels can be pulled about in no wind and can climb or glide depending on how the frame is flexed.

The large tapertail is pretty stable...the small one is a bit more active.......the truss can be actively flown. Or if it is a tapertail truss then it should be quite stable....
Then throw in the tapertailS which is a great indoor active flyer.
The mini glider is an awesome active flyer.....and the 4 bigger gliders are all active flyers too........
So many choices!

Anyone know anyone who is selling a WALA?
I quite fancy giving one a try.
