Hi,

Off on hols in a couple of weeks and I want to take my Superfly and Vented DS but struggling to find a suitcase to fit the DS once broken down. OH has just bought a new case from Matalan and I can fit the SF in but not the DS.

Any suggestions for a large suitcase ?

Can I take them as hand luggage or will they still be to long ?

Thanks.

Hi Saw, there’s a post from Jieming in the Dual-line tricks and flying forum about travelling with kites and hand luggage which might be of use to you?

Thanks BlueSkyBry.

Just found some long wheel along holdalls which go up to 40" :-)

I bought a cricket holdall a few years back, perfect for flying with.

Thinking of getting one of these http://amzn.eu/d/bjBlAJr and taking it as hand luggage, they might not say anything about the size ?

Think I can get a SF and DS in it maybe even three ?

I'd be amazed if you were allowed to take it as hand luggage, most airlines nowadays are very strict on sizing.

Magnet micro-pack

I made a Magnet, with a three-piece leading edge, a three-piece spreader, and a two-piece spine. So all the rods are shorter than the 46.5cm upper spreader!
I also made a small bag, only 48cm's, including a pocket for a lineset.

In the last picture you can see my wife with a normal backpack on our citytrip to Lisboa, Portugal. We took the kite the whole three days just with us in the backpack.
On the last day we found a nice flying field next to the famous Torre de Belém. Very bad winds, but I had a short maiden-flight.
I felt nothing different compared to a normal Magnet. (There are some ferrules extra, and the three-piece spreader is a lot stiffer, because the 5PT has more cut-off from the thin side.)

Now I'll toss it somewhere in the car.

If you want to do something like this, do some good planning. Or contact me. Or do both.

You don't want to cut a rod at 46cm and then glue a ferrule in it! Haha.
Also for the centrecross you'll need some good thinking. I used a knotted centre-t, but then, the cut-out for the centre-t has to be a lot bigger, because you need the space to disconnect the spine.
And for easy packing and building it up, I made a smart solution for the leechline and the tensioning of the leading edge. I only need two minutes more compare to a long-packed kite.

Cheers!

This is very good work ... I believe there is a market/niche for a kite like this.

I nearly did this to my ‘spare’ Outer Space, probably still have the spare ferrules etc in my bits box.
Well done for making it work well

This is brilliant! I do a lot of hiking and backpacking, and often wish I had a kite with me just in case. I sometimes take a foil but it's just not the same. I've contemplated doing something like this but assumed the extra joints would impact performance or durability, so good to hear it's performing well so far!
