KyteMe Sport Jacket

Thu Oct 13, 2016 9:19 am

I got an email from Yvonne Joh who is preparing her second kickstarter project. It's for a sports jacket that can turn into a kite! She thought we might be interested in it, so here's the blurb, and a link...

Hi Freestyle team,

my name is Yvonne and we are about to launch our new kickstarter campaign
in a few days.

I guess it would be interesting for your forum member, so I would like to
ask you for support us?

KyteMe is a windbreaker or light jacket that is ultra-compact, ultra-light,
breathable, and wind and rain repellent. It is ideal for cycling, running,
and many other sporty outdoor activities. KyteMe is the first
multifunctional windbreaker that can fly. With a few simple steps, it can
be converted into a fully functioning stunt kite!  We have put a lot of
months and countless tests into bringing this product from conception to
finished prototype. This is our second Kickstarter project and we are now
ready to begin production with your support.

Please check out more information at: http://www.kyteme.de or directly at
the preview here:

Thank you so much, and kind regards, Yvonne and the KyteMe team

It looks like they're looking for some constructive feedback. I know it's not aimed at the high end market, but maybe people have some ideas?

Priceless.  You can stay dry on your way to fly, but you get piss wet through if you take the jacket off to fly it, if for some reason you think it's a better idea than flying a proper kite.

Or am I missing something here?  :?:

I'm out.

Doesn`t exactly market itself particularly when flown by a non flyer. But then would a flyer be seen doing so?!!!!!!

Wow. What a ridiculous idea....its as appealing to me as edible knickers.

I'll try and be constructive however.

Just who is the target market for this? Really think about this point as I'm pretty confident there isn't one. I can't see who would buy it or think they needed one enough to go looking whether it exists.

The golden rule in product design is identify a problem and then think of a solution. I feel this is an idea that doesn't address any known problem. If anything the product introduces problems.

A) If you have to put the sticks into a bag, then why not just put your normal rain coat into the bag and take a proper kite.

B) If im flying it i still need to take another coat if it is windy/rainy (normal for the UK the last few years  ) , thus making it pointless.

...I decide to go out for some reason but its raining so i put on my kite jacket. It then stops raining and then, by chance, i am stood in a field and i think 'what i really need to do right now is fly a kite'..a wet one at that because I've just been wearing the jacket in the rain. I fly the kite jacket but it starts raining again. Damn it, now i've got to get the kite back in, and make it back into a jacket....FFS I'm wet now, cold and annoyed.

My advice is to stop putting any more effort/money into this.

Sorry, but its just daft.

Indeed, this is a solution without a problem, which, as a result of that, creates more problems to which it isn't the solution in the first place.

Is this for real?. I keep checking in expecting to find its just been a bit of a laugh. If this is a genuine project then all I can say is I would be interested to see the results from any market research that was done prior to developing this idea. I really cant see that this is a viable buisness model. Sorry to be so negative particularly when people are trying to make a living but I just cant see how this idea could succeed.

It does look for real, but do keep in mind that we at FA certainly aren't part of the target market. Not sure what that target market actually is, though. I have to admit being curious as to how this kite would fly ... Those of you who know me will know I'm drawn to the unusual, and this is most surely an unusual kite, in several different ways!

Project has now gone live. I succumbed to the curiosity of how it will fly, even though I don't see how it will work as a dual-purpose jacket/kite. We'll see if it gets enough backers, and if not, nothing lost.

Just realised this isn't even waterproof. It's rainproof "to a certain degree."
