Any recommendations for a new kite bag

Wed Jul 27, 2016 11:11 am

I've had my current Kite bag for over 20 years - it was manufactured by "protection racket" from a very heavy duty black waterproof canvas.

Image

5 inch Diameter and 5 ft 6 inches long and holds about 10 kites with an added 4.5 plastic tube inside for long haul flights and about 13 kites without the tube

It's travelled with everywhere but it's not got much longer left in it.

I've contacted the company and they no longer make them - they've concentrated on their core business (making cases for musical instruments and ancillaries)

Any recommendations for a replacement??

Thank you both - I have contacted them and will see if they still have stock

I was trying to avoid bags made from "Ripstock" as many appear to be and that one likes like a much more durable material

There is also a Vector kite bag, which some of the German shops sell, which is also worth a look.

Kitehouse appear to have them in stock, but I'm sure you can find them elsewhere.

The Kitehouse link includes some detail close ups, so worth checking out.

Most of the other decent bags have come and gone, e.g R-Sky and HQ both used to sell decent quality bags, but have either stopped selling or moved downmarket.

The only problem, I believe, with the Vector bag is that it might be a little short for some full sized kites.

If you're spending this sort of money - make sure everything you have will fit at least.

We have a Vector bag as well, which is a very nice bag, but indeed not long enough for full-size team kites. The vast majority of kites that live in our Airdynamics bags wouldn't fit in the Vector bag. We actually use the Vector bag for our quad-kites.

I would chime in but as I designed the STACK bag from Airdynamics I might be considered biased. Unless you want more than a few then Airdynamics will have stock after this weekend for sure.

I have one of the R-Sky bags ... but to be honest its not very useful. Its a pretty big and bulky and theres no way I'd load it up
with kites and lug it over the dunes to the beach. I take it on vacation with a bunch of kites but I leave it wherever we're staying
and take 3 or 4 kites in a lightweight bag to the beach each day.

YMMV tho

If you are on a budget, there are some good 170 cm long ski or snowboard bags available on evil bay

Fishing rod bags work well too - Lidl & Aldi sell bags made by Crane from time to time for around £12 which work well.

I made my own roll up bag styled after the Prism Speedbag which works well for 3-4 kites which is probably all you need to take down to your local field.

Still love the Prism Speedbag. Holds more kites then it is designed for and i like the fact that i can fold it over when i travel with collapsed LE rods.

HQ Kite bags are another cheaper option.

Although I suspect you get what you pay for.

Having said that I have one of the old HQ padded bags which is a very nice bag.

Just to round up this topic

Thanks everyone for their suggestions - the Fishing Bag option was something I hadn't thought of

I've ordered one from Airdynamics - should be with me Friday - great to deal with and I got a couple of spare pieces for my Dharma at the same time

I'll post up a review when I've got it and started using it

Well it's arrived

Initial impressions

- Well made
- Good Heavy Duty Materials
- Seems to have more capacity than I probably need

Will hopefully spend some time this evening filling it with kites and lines
