Peter Powell

Sun Jan 03, 2016 6:15 pm

Died this morning apparently.

The correct response is to be sad about this, but I'm giving him one if these instead.

Sad day, but he must have reached a ripe old age.

Having seen them on Blue Peter, my parents bought me one to fly whilst on a family holiday. I must have flown it solidly for most of the holiday until the plastic form sail tore.

Didn't pick up another kite until my son was given a dual line kite, which whetted my interest again.

My son lost interest quite quickly, but I'm still flying and of course it all Peter Powell's fault. ;)

Good on you. =D>

Top chap!

According to the BBC website, at his peak, he had three factories producing an astonishing 75,000 kites a week!!!!

Imagine if today's UK kite manufacturers could produce that kind of volume and find people to buy them!

I remember in the 70's seeing Peter Powell kites flying in every park I ever visited.

Strangely,I have no memory of seeing other PPk's flying, but I did see a new one flying this year on the beach; even had a go with it myself.

Last time I was in Cheltenham,February,I think,I was going to visit the shop and ask them the dimensions of the middle aluminium part of the spreaders used back in the seventies (I lost mine) but looked for it in the wrong 'arcade' (the shop, that is).

There was an article about PP on Radio 4's Last Word yesterday. It's still on the iPlayer - starts at about 13:15 and ends 18:55. One of his sons is interviewed.
