Wed Oct 02, 2013 10:43 am

This kickstarter project could be of interest to anyone who wants to make their own carbon fibre spars:

I can buy a whole spar for less than $20 so the costings are wrong.
All that matters in life is kite flying, love and work ….preferably in that order.

In the bag; Shhhhh... far too many to mention, don't tell the Missus!

time to make a super-sized Thor's Hammer then ;-)

I guess that explains the inflated pricing if the tubes are that big

Looking at it some more, the rig looks like it will adjust to fit different mandrel sizes, so as long as you can make a mandrel the size you want, you can make smaller (or larger) tubes - even non-circular shapes would be possible (as long as you can get the mandrel out from the wound fabrication...)

I like the idea - but I think many manufacturers take advantage of scale economies when it comes to products like this

Youlld have to want to produce a LOT of spars to justify any costs (not including time to actually make the spars etc)

Though - it works for the kite sellers around here I guess and they might be able to take advantage of cost reductions over a long run

Would that affect an end-user like myself in tems of buyer power? Maybe...maybe not
