For those who send kites etc by Royal mail!

Tue Apr 02, 2013 12:39 pm

For those of you who send kites, spars etc by Royal Mail - ie long parcels- please note !

New rules/prices now apply - as far as I can see

There is no longer a 'special delivery' option.

You can't send poster tubes up to 90cm anymore as 'standard parcels' - the new limit for 'medium parcels' is 61cm and after that you have to use Parcelforce 24 or 48 service - minimum charge Parcelforce 48 (2kg minimum weight catagory) - £11.96!! You do get a tracking number as standard.

Poster tubes up to 90cm can still be sent International but not internal.

Worth bearing in mind if you are selling on Ebay etc or you might end up out of pocket! ( :x )
Current Bag:- HQ Shadow, Spiderkites Zodarion, Flying Wings Soul, Old blue HQ Jive , 'PAW' modded HQ Maestro II, Delta Hawk,

It's getting very complex, however.

Rolled and cylinder shaped parcels

For rolled and cylinder shaped items, the length of the item plus twice the diameter must not exceed 104cm, with the greatest dimension being no more than 90cm.

Rolled and cylinder shaped parcels that measure up to 45cm in length and 8cm in diameter and do not exceed 2kg can be sent as small parcels.

This sounds like an attempt to unify with other euro countries - I came across similar rules when buying from someone in Germany on Drachenforum.

It mentions rolled & cylindrical items on the website, but in the price guide book ( available from all good(?) Post Offices) it only mentions them for International delivery, UK delivery would seem to say that you can only use 1st & 2nd class parcels up to 61cm and after that you have to use parcelfarce.

My item was over 90cm anyway and triangular, but the old Standard parcels was always a cheaper option but it seems that has now gone. :-( Seems to be deliberately confusing to me...

I've always used tubes, just as well it seems.

If you want to see a truely awful and confusing piece of graphic design get the April 2013 "Our Prices" leaflet from the PO (and there seem to be at least two fundamental mistakes in this leaflet that whoever proof read it should have caught). And compared to last week some prices have increased by 85%. That's going to make a dent in Government inflation figures!
