How to post your own images

Tue Aug 10, 2010 10:24 am

I was asked in PM how to link your own images into a post. Here's the answer I sent, for the benefit of anyone else who wants to know.

Due to the cost of bandwidth it wasn't economical for us to host user's pictures any more... so you'll need to host them somewhere else, and then you can link them into your posting here.

I'd suggest flickr.com for the sheer reliability and spread of functions they have (you can even edit photos to some extent online.)

Otherwise, imgur.com is a real quick and easy way to host images. You don't even need to sign up for an account.

Once you've uploaded your image, you need to find the address for the image.

In flickr, go to the photo page in your photostream, click Share This, select "Grab the HTML", change the selection box to BBCode (which is what our forum runs on) and copy the code it gives you. Then just paste that into your post.

The code looks like:
[url=https://flic.kr/p/gUoSYo][img]https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7397/10438273246_1685ed3e9f_z.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/gUoSYo]Untitled[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/savidge/]hir0[/url], on Flickr

and the end-effect is like:
ImageUntitled by hir0, on Flickr

In imgur as soon as you upload it you get a page with all the link options on it. Choose the Message board code or the Linked Message Board code and paste that into your post.

Those codes, similarly look like
[IMG]http://imgur.com/ucEXF.jpg[/IMG]
or
[URL=http://imgur.com/ucEXF.jpg][IMG]http://imgur.com/ucEXF.jpg[/IMG][/URL]

and end up looking like

or

Thanks for the tip - I'd not seen the BBcode option on flickr before - very handy

I think it might be new. I was surprised by the new UI when I logged in to write the instructions.

I'm trying to upload an avatar, using Flickr. I can select the BBC code OK, and it looks more or less like the sample you gave in your opening message. But when I copy & paste it into the new-avatar window I get a message (in red) saying the value is too long. What am I doing wrong, please?

For an avatar just use the portion of code that looks like this:

It works with Flickr and IMGUR and any other picture hosting site you can find. We don't offer image hosting, due to the bandwidth costs, sorry.

This thread might be a good one to 'Sticky' Andy.

Flickr have changed their interface a bit since Andy first put up this post.

First click on the bent arrow to the bottom right of the image.

Then follow this in the pop-up dialog.

Another good option for image hosting is ImgBB . Free image hosting up to 16MB per image and formatted code to just paste in here to embed the images.
You can resize or crop an image online using something like PicResize and specify a maximum filesize as an optional parameter.

Excellent, I tried to embed that Lazarus video in the other thread, and couldn't work out how, and I even read the instructions (a first for me!) =D>
