Proposed Format and Scoring (quick & dirty)

Wed Aug 18, 2004 10:02 pm

This is a mix of previous posts on the subjects of scoring freestyle comps and the proposed formats for submission. Apologies etc. to previous posters - Credit to ABW and Martin for a degree of the information to follow...

'Virtual' Format:
Video clips in any common format (.wmv .avi .mov .mpg etc.)
Footage showing kite in flight for approx. 60 seconds
Sequence to start with any launch

'Scoring' Format:
Scoring on 2 areas - Technical and Artistic
Each section maximum of 10 points, minimum of 1
Scores to be submitted by each entrant for all entered clips (excluding their own)

It's been suggested that the contest is split into at least 2 leagues - One for accomplished flyers and another 'fun' category for those who'd otherwise be intimidated out of competing.

The whole idea behind this is to be fun - I'd like to see it being as 'inclusive' as is possible. At the moment it's just for fun, whether or not someone wants to add an 'incentive' of some sort or other is up for discussion.

Over to you...

Did we decide on 60 seconds of continuous flying?

Sorry Ed, yeah. Would be preferred - Keeps it true to the competitive format...

60 seconds of flying sounds good to me, as do 2 leagues (BUT - what if, say, 6 competitors out of 8 decide to compete in the "fun" category?)

I have no problem with 60 secs, I just know that some digital cameras can only handle 30 second bursts. Therby we limit the number of people who can compete in the future.

Hmm. This is true, but the 30 second cameras are becoming relatively rare nowadays. The one I use captures 3 minutes and it's a very ordinary pocket digicam from a few years ago.

Also, my opinion is that 30 seconds is simply too short.

lol @ Chilese's comment here (3rd comment):

But it raises a good point. Are the scores final and unchangeable when submitted?

Does it? Frankly, I don't see what it has to do with anything. IIRC, that old "virtual judging" thread was about doing a much more complicated analysis (of an actual comp ballet routine to boot) than what we're doing here, and the Debray clip was also taken out of its context. No wonder it died out. I bet Chilese didn't even bother to read the FA thread. "Judging" the VF clips is hardly rocket science and it doesn't take much effort or any judging experience either.

Shouldn't they be?

Everyone who takes part submits a score.

I was

a) amused that Mike was making trouble for a change ;) and
b) wondering if there's any arbitration for a score that seems wildly off the mark...

Hopefully it'll all work out in the mix Andy. I don't want to go too hard and heavy with this as a format - It's just a bit of craic in the end.

Besides, if someone wants to give me a straight 20... I won't mind - I would wonder where that extra '0' came in from though ;)

As I understand it, the VF comp will actually judge the flying and not the judging. :o Should the scoring be confidential? Should it be, at least, sent in via email?

I hope this works and folks understand you guys are just trying to make it fun. :)
