2016 STACK UK Nationals Championships

Tue Jun 07, 2016 6:14 pm

The 2016 STACK UK Nationals Championships will be run over two weekends, one in the South and one in the North. The aim will be to run two rounds of competition at each weekend (subject to wind, weather and number of competitors).

In a change to recent practice, all rounds will be run to the full IRB format - that is a precision discipline comprising 3 figures and a technical freestyle routine and a ballet discipline (with a ballet obviously) for each round.

The Southern leg of the 2016 STACK UK National Championships will be held over the weekend of 11th-12th June 2016 at Dunstable Downs (the National Trust Chilterns Gateway Centre).

The Northern leg will be held over the weekend of 2nd-3rd July 2016 at Souter Lighthouse (Coast Road, Whitburn, Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, SR6 7NH).

As well as two rounds of IRB competition each leg will also include single rounds of multi-kite ballet and freestyle competitions.

Programme

The outline programme for each leg is as follows:

Day 1
- 9:30 am - Pilots meeting
- Morning - IRB Precision competition - round 1 or 3
- Late Morning - Multi-kite ballet competition
- Lunch
- Afternoon - IRB ballet competition - round 1 or 3
- Late afternoon - coaching and mega-team

Day 2
- 9:30 am - Pilots meeting
- Morning - IRB Precision competition - round 2 or 4
- Late Morning - Freestyle competition
- Lunch
- Afternoon - IRB ballet competition - round 2 or 4

All of this is dependent on weather and competitor numbers, obviously.

Competition is open to novice, experience and master class flyers, so if you have always thought about competing why not have a go in the novice class? Or if you have previously competed, now is the time to have another go.

Freestyle Competition

A freestyle competition will be held, with one round in each leg. This is a competition intended for individual trick flyers.

The competition will based on a simplified version of the Tricks Party format. There will be four imposed figures and a ballet. Competitors may make up to 2 attempts at an imposed trick. The ballet should be choreographed to music. However unlike the full Tricks Party the tricks in the ballet need not be declared in advance. The ballet will be judged based on the difficulty of the tricks, the quality of the execution and how well the performance fits the music. All timings will be as for the IRB individual competition, and one field crew will be allowed.

Four imposed tricks will be selected on the day from the following list:
- Fade (group 2);
- Cascade (group 2) [Axel Cascade];
- 540 (group 3);
- Lazy Susan (group 3) [NOT the Snap Lazy];
- Slide (group 3);
- Yo-Yo (group 3);
- Backspin (group 4);
- Jacob's Ladder (group 4).

The overall result will be based on the best single score from either round.

Multi-kite Competition

A Multi-Kite ballet competition will be held with one round in each leg (providing there are competitors able to fly multiple kites on the day). This is a competition for individual flyers flying two or three kites.

The competition will be run and judged exactly as the ballet competition for the IRB event, however all timings will be as for the pairs competition, and two field crew will be allowed.

The overall result will be based on the best single score from either round.

Some pics of the southern leg at Dunstable here. Pretty decent weather on Saturday, allowing us to run both rounds then. Sunday was mostly wet ...

Disappointingly few competitors. Any freestylers coming to the northern leg (Souter Lighthouse, July 2&3) to make sure Miguel doesn't just walk away with the title?

As to our own performance, we were really pleased to have improved on our overall score from last year by about 15 points. And to have beaten Phoenix in four of the six compulsory figures 8) They beat us hands-down in technical routine and ballet, so they're still well ahead of us (but the gap is getting smaller!)

We know exactly what we need to work on for next year!

I'll see if I can get up for the freestyle competition.

Never tried to do a ballet before so should be a laugh. Probably will have to make the ballet up on the day, as although I will get some practice in at Filey this tends to involve lots of beer so the chance of me remembering it are slim to zero :roll:

I'll confirm once the 'boss' gets home from work.

This weekend is the second Leg of STACK UK National Championship, which will be held at Souter Lighthouse (Coast Road, Whitburn, Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, SR6 7NH).

The overall IRB national championship result is based on the best two performances of the year, so the championship is still wide open.

This is an open event, so if you have never entered a kite competition but fancy a go why not come along and give it a try. Or, if you used to compete, but haven't for a while, this would be a good time to return.

Weather permitting there will be two rounds of IRB competition (figures and technical routine in the mornings, ballets in the afternoon). Both dual line and multi-line competitions will be run, for individuals, pairs and teams. Figures will be selected from those listed in the original post.

In addition there will be a multi-kite ballet competition on Saturday (for people who can fly 2 or 3 kites at the same time) and the second round of a freestyle competition, loosely based on the tricks party format, on Sunday (imposed tricks listed in the original post).

The programme is as in the original post, and the start time is 9:30 each day. Note: if things are going well we may bring forward some of Sunday's events into Saturday.

The competition entry fee for new competitors is just £5. You don't need to be a STACK member to compete, but you do need to have public liability insurance. (If you don't have this, STACK membership provides this at a very reasonable price - £14).
