Sparring a lightweight Rev

Tue Jun 22, 2004 10:00 pm

I have been doing some research into alternative spars for my Rev. The main objective is to create a lightweight kite that will fly properly on those low wind days. I have looked at Avia Excel and Skyshark spars and decided that Skyshark P2 would work really well for very low wind condition, P100 for low wind and standard spars for 8 mph plus. Having spoken to some people I have learned that Skyshark P3 (equivalent to P100) is too bendy for a Rev and have the tendency to break. So can anybody please help with alternative spars for a low wind Rev or will I have to give in and buy Rev ultra light 2 wrap professional spars?

Stefan,
I think you'll have to bite the bullet and buy those rev SUL spars. Most other lightweight spars will be too bendy. The LE length is so long and unlike a 2 line kite where the frame forms connected triangles to strengthen itself, the rev is just one unsupported length. The surface area is quite big too and if the spars aren't up to it, any attemp to pump the kite in low/no wind just results in a snapped LE.

Stefan, email Chris Goff, i flew his UL at Rougham, i used my UL with the UL spars, for some reason his felt a lot easier to fly than mine i know he uses skyshark, which ones i can't remember.the wind that evening was only about 2mph But worth getting in contact with Chris,

i ordered the SUL LE and spars from GWTW to addapt my SLE in those light "walk slowly backwards accross the field" wind days

I expect we'll be in for some good winds for a while after I get them :D

If you order some spars, measure the weight!
Last time I ordered Rev1.5 SUL spars, I got something different.

Oh yes, it had the Revolution Ultralight Button on it and the print on the package claiming this were light spars. But after I took one out, I thought something is wrong. So I measured the spar.
A the end all the 'ultralight' spars measured 24g. Hey, I expected 16g like all the other 'ultralights' I have.

IMO, Revolution can not ensure quality. You never know what you get. If you have the chance, do not by the spars on the internet, but got to your loacal dealer and measure the spars there.

I've made a couple of RYV's (like a Rev, but different) and each have both a Rev UL frameset and a frame made out of P300 (spreader) and P100 downspars. I also have a set of "Response 12" that I use when the P100's are a little overpowered.

The P300 fits nicely inside the Rev endcaps.

I've also stacked them while using the P300 frameset.

jk, FYI

I bought some Rev Ultra Light Spars (not the professional use only, 2 wrap) several days ago. The UL spars did not seem to make any difference to the performance of my EXP in low wind conditions so I weighed them. The UL spars weighed in at 20g/spar against 18g/spar for my standard EXP spars. So the search for real lightweight spars continue.

The professional use ones are the SUL Rev spars. No idea how much they weigh though, never tried. They are significantly lighter than the UL or EXP though.

The UL are used in the standard 1.5 as I understand it, which doesn't make much sense unless you are a Revolution employee probably :D
