Of bikes, Freds and MAMILs

Sat Jun 09, 2012 1:55 pm

Hopefully you know what the first is but here's help with Fred and MAMIL if you don't know.

I know there are other cyclists out there and I know how much we cyclists like to show off our rides so..... behold !

Image

The majesty that is my Orbea Orca SLi2. It is absurdly more bike than I will ever be able to make use of, cost a frankly daft amount of money and I will eviscerate anyone who tries to take it from me. It features the new electronic shifting Ultegra Di2 and I don't recommend this to anyone who knows they will have to ride mechanical shifters ever again. You will weep if you have to go back. I certainly don't intend to. More pics here.

C'mon... share a pic or two.

Mike.

I do like the Orca's very smart, not convinced about Di2 though, the luddite in me disapproves......

If it stops raining long enough I'll do a couple of snaps of my stable!

My summer ride:

Its custom made by Nick Crumpton out of Austin, TX.

Its a little passe' these days ... thats only 10 speed (Campy Record), with cable shifters, but I can guarantee its much faster than Mike's Orca :P

Your internal Luddite is doing you a huge disservice. I tried a Dura Ace Di2 demo bike a couple of years ago and became very jealous of anyone with enough money and insufficient self restraint to get this. Last year's Ultegra Di2 demos removed any resistance. It is such an obvious improvement over cables - the auto front trim alone is worth the money.

It's never the bike, it's always the rider  And I am lardy, so I'm tardy. Not doing this to go fast though. If I was I'd have bought something with an engine.

My 3 road bikes :-D

First up, Kuota Kharma, Carbon, Ultegra, Fulcrum Racing 3's, only gets ridden in the summer 8)

Image

Next up, Van Nicholas Euros, Titanium, Campag Centaur, Campag Neutrons, probably the most ridden of my bikes, and is a lovely ride

Image

Lastly, Forme Plateau, Aluminium winter bike with full guards, Ultegra/105mix, a great ride for crappy weather!

Image

Do I need them all, of course not, do I do them justice, no way, a 10 year old on a Chopper can kick my arse going up hill, but who cares

Weird - all your bikes have sticky-outy gears - I prefer mine to be hidden in the hub

I'm not sure it had been out of the garden when I took that picture.

At the post-sale service I got told off for cleaning it too much!

I am a reformed mountain biker. All of the group I used to shred (as I believe the young folks used to say) with stopped due to accident, injury or near death experience. The last of us stopped when he hit a tree. Or more accurately when he hit the bit of the tree that lies about a metre and a half from the ground.

Mint Sauce was my hero.

Mike, mike mike... There's no such thing as a reformed mountain biker - reformed roady perhaps, but even then you can spot 'em a mile away. One of our boys is an almost 50 year old former roady - he's the only one that gets acknowledged (gentle nod of the head) by the road cycling fraternity - the rest of us get ignored - Must be the way he sits ??

Accidents, injuries & near death experiences are run of the mill - just adds interest :-)

Mint Sauce ROCKS...

The electric shifter thing is very interesting - and they (Shimano) are apparently going to do it for hub gears too:

http://www.wired.com/playbook/2012/03/s ... lfine-di2/

Stick a belt drive on a bike with those gears, hide the wires in the frame and the battery in the seat stem (or hook it up to the dynohub), and that would be a super clean looking super quiet riding machine.
