Orange: frameset ?

Sat Jan 17, 2004 9:14 am

I'll be setting about building an Orange or two shortly and I was mulling over framing options. Simo himself suggested:-
2PT LEs, 3PT LSs, 3PT spine
I considered going the whole SUL way with
Skinny LEs, Skinny LSs, Skinny spine
which should save around 16g. on the above or a light standard with:
P100 LEs, P200 LSs, P200 spine
which would be circa 30g. heavier and emphasise durability over weight.

Anything else spring to mind ?

Hmm, I think Simo actually said 2P LE's, 3P spine and lower spreaders. That's the current frame in his own SUL. 3P's can be a bit hard to get nowadays though.

Ooh, Skinnies. Expensive. But nice. Have you considered the fact that you may possibly have to be a bit... careful while flying with an all-Skinny frame? The Orange has quite a lot of sail area, you know. I've flown the original (which has pultruded Exel 5.5 LE's) in practically zero winds without much trouble.

That may work very nicely. The Red (P100, P300) isn't heavy either though.

Actually this is true. Transcription error on my part.

It'd be an Absolute Zero version. Wind would scare it back to the kite bag 8-) but I've only broken Skinnies in the IS through really screwing up. Nothing gone bang in the air.

I was considering a mylar SUL and an all-white Standard (P100 and P200).

How about P90 le's and P100 spine and lower spreaders, UL rather than SUL ?

Original Orange is... LE = exel 5,5mm, lower spreader and spine = SkyShark 3P, upper spreader = exel 5mm

Red is... LE = P100, spine = P100, and lower spreader is P300

SUL is... LE = 2P, lower spreader and spine = 3P, and upper spreader is exel 5mm (optional 4mm)

Original Orange is...hmm... almost zerowind kite... it weight ~190g and works fine in lo wind.... SUL is only experiment, how it work in "pro" frame.... and little testsession conclusion is... it´s quite good :-D .. Juha can tell more...

Red is, like all my Orange version, very light weight kite... it works fine all, almost all normal wind range. I fly it up ~1,5m/s and I like it very much

So... You can make what you want... Orange is very good "basic" kite. Form is very basic, without problems... good fly with Orange :D :D :D

Given that the orginal Orange is pretty low wind anyway is there much point in throwing a silly light frame at it ? I don't really feel like ending with a kite that takes off in a vacuum but won't rotate, trickwise. Seems like missing the aim.

I am thinking now of a just-less-than-original Orange (P100 and P200) that should be good in low wind and maybe a beefed up one too. 6mm and G-Force SULs (about 5PT equivalent) might be something to consider.

I am also thinking of reworking the spine reinforcement a little. I really like the treatment on my Catalyst; a broad strip of dacron runs the length on the spine on the front of the sail and forms a "centre panel". Just thinking though :eh:

Is this the kind of thread only kite obsessed geeks would understand

Thankfully, I'm not sure if I do :P

You make "kite obsessed geeks" sound like a bad thing ! :-)

Ahh... the joy of a well judged reframe. The ecstasy of a perfectly considered bridle change. You know not what you are denying yourself. :-P

Okay. I am obviously not qualified as a "kite obsessed geek". My wife would disagree.

To enable me to qualify, please can someone tell me what an "Orange" is, apart from a mobile phone company and a fruit?
