transparent repair tape

Wed Aug 17, 2016 8:26 am

Looking for a UK source of transparent repair tape for quick repairs of small holes/tears. I always used the tedlar(?) repair tape I got from kiteworld, which works a treat for me (easy to cut in shape, very thin but strong, easy to apply, sticks very well), but have almost run out of it, and kiteworld doesn't stock it anymore. Can anyone recommend an alternative?

Searching "sail repair tape" on Ebay throws up quite a few clear tapes amongst the usual ripstop tape- I tend to avoid the clear tape as it is very gummy and if you want to do a sewn repair later can a real pain to get off the sail.

I have never used it yet but some use 3M Blenderm tape.
Available on e-bay or amazon...
I suppose this is what I will try when I need to repair a sail.
Worth to try I think.
Of course it would be great to hear any opinion from someone who used it.

Cheers!

I've used the superglue technique a few times in the past to fix small rips and tears - have you tried that?

I have used the superglue technique, but that doesn't really work in the field, as you need a flat surface, etc.

Moonie tape or the Flexifoil repair tape are good. Can't help with a supplier however.

I've always looked at the Scotch Magic Tape and thought it could work well though and is easy to pick up in any stationers. Might be worth a go for a few pounds?

Not UK based, but I've had great success with Tenacious Tape. Clear, easy to shape, sticks to sail very strongly. Bought it off Ebay, from the US, delivered cheap all the way to my home.
Thank you kindly,
Iftah.

Hi Lex,

I have been using Mylar repair tape, but I have no idea where I bought it.

The link above will give you an image.

For big repairs I have tended to stick a strip of Mylar to hold the pieces together, then superglue on the other side with activator to make the glue go off. Seems to work well on team kites so far ....

Obtainable from most good sailing shops.

Try Dave Stubbs at Coast Water Sports: https://www.coastwatersports.co.uk/psp-mylar-tape-50mm-3m-clear-p-1353.html. £2.82 + P&P.

UHMW tape is fabulous stuff for sail repairs. This is what Ken Mc Neil called "moonie tape". Comes in different widths and thicknesses. Look for the thinner stuff. It doesn't show when the the kite is flying, so pretty much an invisible repair solution

That Mylar is good for kites that don't have a'wear patch' where the top spreader crosses the spine,
