project invictus 75% SUL

Thu Jan 03, 2013 1:56 pm

Hello Everyone,

I got an idea to build a SUL kite based on 4mm carbon frame with wingspan about 200cm.

for this purpose i have taken plan of Invictus by Davide Equizzi and scaled it down to 75%, I have also simplified the panel layout to make the build easier:
Image

I have build first trial sail using foil just to check if it fly and will be able to perform some tricks.

The sail, frame and bridle is strictly scaled to 75% according to plan. I only had to shorten a little ( about 1cm) inner standoff because sail was tesioned little bit to hard at this point.

After first test flying I am really glad of the result. I was able to perform all tricks which i know ( i am not advanced pilot). Now i am planning to sew sail from about 32g/m2 ripstop spinaker nylon which will be much lighter and more pecise than the foil prototype.

Maybe You have some suggestion before I will cut the sail panels? I have found only one topic about scaling sails but not much conclusions in there.

I have finished the first sail.

results are pretty satisfying:

materials used:
- sail - ripstop about32g
- LE - ripstop 90g 3cm
- TE - ripstop 32g 1,5cm
- reinforcments - ripstop 90g

I will post some video after first test flying.
If someone is intrested i can post resized plans with this panel layout plans and frame dimensions

Wow! Super nice. :o :D

I really like your colour choices and layout. :D =D>

Have you tried it yet?
How SUL is it really?
What is the final total weight?

Why did you use ripstop instead of Icarex?

For the prototype what type of foil do you use? I mean, what is "foil"?

I have just finished building my first dual line so I've had my ration of building for some time. However, in some months time I might be interested in building an SUL and this seems like a great candidate.
Cheers.

Thanks,
A lot of questions to answer :D:

no, wind is too strong at the moment, i don't want to brake it on first fly;

i don,t have kitchen sclale i need to check it. i guess not more than 200g

two reasons: I can buy it here locallly from local sail makers and it is almost twice cheaper than Icarex, This is the spinaker ripstop nylon used to produce race sails so it has very good stretch parameters.

This was a some kind of PVC foil used for roof isolation. I had some loftowver form latest roof renovation so it was good material to use it. the belt is 3m wide so it was easy to cut sail from single piece.

Great, thanks for the answers!

I will be looking forward to a video and to the final info on weight.
Cheers :D

i think this nice looking kite will fly much better with some good spreaders, 2PT's or G-Force Skinny UL (and that way you'll lose the big/heavy centrecross)

i'm also looking forward to your report of the maiden flight

At the moment the weight is 140g (including bridle).

Maybe at the next version of this project i will consider stronger framing.

Some first testing are done.

General impresion is very good, i don't have much experience but kite allows me to to everything i can and far more.

The wind range is about 0-12km/h - i was afraid to fly in stronger wind.
Best Trick wind range is about 3-8km/h

Kite is very sharp and requires precise inputs. Have some oversteering at the exit of tricks. I am still trying to adapt stand-off lenght and bridle.

Dou You know if the 26cm in Dave's project is including connectors (from spreader to sail) or the rods only?

The leading edge spar should be longer than calculated from scaling because at the moment I am unable to tension LE propperly. I think 115cm should be OK.

I am still trying to record some propper video but with not much success :/

or here:

This time wind was 2-4km/h

Kite mod's:
- simple 3 point bridle with longer outhaul and shorter inhoul
- single piece lower spreader 4,5mm structil
- addaed YoYo stoppers

Flies really nice and the colours look so good in the sky (and with the snowy backdrop).
