Deeper turtles

Mon Mar 07, 2011 9:37 am

Hello, is there anyway of adjusting how deep a kite will sit in a turtle?

The ways I have thought of are:

1. Reducing the tail weight

2. Stuffing the top spreader or adding weight to the nose

3. Moving the lower spreaders up

4. Adjusting the bridle

or maybe a combination of these. Has anyone tried these or any other approaches to any (positive) effect.

Thanks H

You can also change your technique - some kites eg Deep Space, Mantis need to be put firmly into a turtle they don't just settle there

Do you want the kite to settle deep into a turtle or just long enough to pop a lazy etc?

3 has a profound affect, although I've seen few kites using it.

Thanks for the responses. I find that I have to flick my wrists on kites like the ds to sit the kite right back and there is a moment when you have to strike rather than letting it float otherwise the turtle shallows out like Craig and Ian are illuding to. This is fine but if you are trying to learn cyniques (badly) then it can be difficult.

I appreciate this can go the other way and it can be far more annoying when a kite that doesn't want to come out of a turtle at all. However this is a very minor gripe and I love my ds to bits though. Any further suggestions welcome, cheers H

The Cynique is very kite dependent, you need to not let the kite settle at all, if you do it's a reversing Lazy.

Craig, Awww man don't tell me I'm doing it all wrong. I am having trouble doing either to be honest. I will try out a few minor adjustments but it's probably just natures way of telling me to be a better pilot. No excuse now I have some fantastic gear .... right ? :-D :-D :-D

the very best adjustment for a deeper turtle is:

moving the inner standoffs to the spine (or make them longer)

just try it, you only have to make a small hole in your trailing edge

Warning:- Holy War subject

It has been also argued that if you don't actually break your kite doing Cyniques then you're not doing it right. Argued by a lunatic, but argued nonetheless.

Very kite dependent move in my experience and very timing~positioning too. I'm not sure if there is a magic/one-size-fits-all "fix" for every kite but I'd be delighted to find out I was wrong. Otherwise.... bitch of a trick.

Harv,

The only conclusion that I have come to is don't try and learn the cynique on a DS. Seem to recall that Chris Goff bought a French kite (Atelier?) specifically to learn this trick.

I think I am gonna have to break out my xtr which seems to like being on it's back more than it likes flying normally. I need all the help I can get. Thanks for the posts.

Jaydub - Chris has bought some ateliers from Martin at the kite store previously I think. Have you been tempted for anything new btw?

[OT] Very tempted, but for a number of reasons kite purchases are not top of the spending priorities atm. Still actively considering the options for when the cash flow improves, with the Black Pearl currently leading by a short nose. :? [/OT]

L'Atelier Cynique and Lazy heaven... (one of my favourite vidoes eva')

Quite easy on most French and German designed kites actually ('s all in the timing) - and I thought that breaking sticks was only compulsory in the learning process.

Oh BTW Mike - been meaning to mention it for a couple of weeks - We went to to cinema at the time for 3D indulgence, but DVD came out here a couple of weeks ago - "B - A - N - A - N - A" - rotflmffao moment. (DVD mini flic extra bit)

Git :P I find it almost laughably easy to make this misfire. Right up there with CTC Flic Flacs for going-well, going-well, gone-to-pot :?

The plaintive "bubble ?" at the end had me in tears.
