Black Dianmond Nitro Spars

Tue Jan 11, 2011 11:01 am

I have a few questions on black diamond nitro spars and I was wondering if anyone could be kind enough to help. This kinda ties in with the other tapered spars thread.

Questions.

1. Are they noticably stiffer than normal 5pt in practice?
2. Is it worth swapping over the 5pt spreaders on say my NSE?
3. At the thick end of the spar the internal diameter is slighter wider than on a 5pt. Can I just frame up in the normal way with with 6mm ferrules on the usual 6mm 'T' piece?
4.Is it more loose than on the normal a normal 5pt because of this and if so how can i overcome this?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks,

Harvey

1. Yes they are stiffer
2. Possibly, but stiffness by itself isn't necessarily a good thing.
3. No, you will need to shim the Nitro, or use a bigger ferrule.
4. See above.

Craig, Thanks for this. What is the best way of shimming the nitro? Can you coat the internal surface with glue or is it wide enough to ferrule with something. I hate it when the ferrule isn't snug as it can move around and split the spar/ LS. Thanks again Harv

An off cut of P100 should do the trick.

Can you use the same method with AS spreaders or is the internal diameter too big to bridge to a 6mm ferrule with say a bit of p300? Sorry if my suggestion daft or if I have a developed a spacial awareness problem. Thanks Harv

Yes, Nitros are the same size as AS rods.

Opinion on:
on my Taipan, Black nitro's were way better than 5pt and p2X was better than both, but p2x has become unobtainium :(
Opinion off.

It will depend very much on the kite, it will depend very much on personal preference, it will depend very much on the sort of wind you normally fly in. My normal rule of thumb would be try it if you don't mind the effort to return it to the previous settings and you don't mind the potential waste of cash. I find I'll try different bottom spreaders, but resent changing leading edges.

Strange as, Nitros are stiff than 5PT and P2X are more flexible :-k

yup, never one for consistency, me.

Perhaps it was some other characteristic that made the difference then, but that was the way I preferred them.
