New set of lines...

Wed Nov 27, 2013 1:50 pm

Hi,

After almost two years, I still don't know whether my lines are good quality or not.

I am using a set that came with my Prism Nexus which I suppose are medium quality.
The other two I made them myself from a line spool that I bought from my local shop. However, this local shop had had these untagged spools for a long time and although they told me they were good I am not too sure of it. (BTW, my local shop in Barcelona, the only shop that remained closed a month ago... :-( )

So, I want to buy a couple of good sets:
1. 25m of 90lbs for my STD
2. 20m of 90lbs for my STD/UL
3. 20m of 75lbs for my UL/SUL
4. 12m of 75lbs for my SUL

BTW, I was thinking on buying ready made lines, basically because I'm lazy (and have little spare time which I want to spend flying and not making lines).
However, since I already built and sleeved some myself and went pretty well, if you convince me I will buy the bits and pieces and do them myself...

So, two questions:
1. Would these specs listed above make sense?
2. Where should I buy them? European dealers please.
I have seen that Benson has some, FA (not ready made), etc., etc.

So all suggestions welcome. If you feel it is too delicate a topic please don't hesitate to PM me.
THANKS!

you need a 30m-set for your sixth sense...

i mainly fly climax protec-lines (red), or climax profiline (yellow), the red ones are slightly better

not very expensive, pretty durable

laser pro gold is also good, maybe the best

Agree with Krijn, 30m for the sixth sense.

Climax Protec or Shanti Speed (from the FA shop) are pretty good. Never tried LPG or Climax Profiline so can't really comment on those.

Shanti Speed only available in 90 or 150lb

Climax Protec only available in 55lb or 110lb

+1 on that. I've used Climax lines for a few years - 88lb profiline and 110lb protec for general purpose and 55lb profiline for my (S)ul's. Both good lines that last very well and very slippery ( 20+ wraps no problem).

Another +1 on Climax Protec; our default line. Usually get my lines from Manfred Kluge / Kites4U. Mostly in bulk for home-sleeving, as we use mostly 40m lines (for pair/team-flying; 2-6m leaders added to that), and that length is not available pre-sleeved.

Wow! 20+ wraps no problem!
Now I know my lines are crappy!
I get 7 or 8 wraps and I can barely control the kite!!!!

Yes, I think I better buy some new ones.

Thanks for the info all of you.

LPG is great when it's new (possibly the best of any) but it wears more quickly than other brands. I used to use it all the time but it's quite difficult to get hold of in the UK. Now I use Shanti Spectra 90lb.

I find the Climax lines (particularly the red) difficult to see when they're on the ground - but maybe that's because I'm slightly colour-blind :P

I'm trying Shanti Skybond. Its a little spendy but its its reported to be strong and its plenty slippy.

Its bright yellow - which is a little odd at first - and not always easy to see lying on the beach.

Not just you. It's surprisingly difficult to see it on grass. Presumably it's almost impossible to spot on sand. ;)

I have also been trying the Skybond, yes not cheap, and like it. Slippery and plenty strong. Seems to wear well. I have always liked the LPG but the skybond is as good or better.

My personal selection will be

Shanti skybond
Laser pro gold or prism modulus
Climax protec
Shanti warp speed
Climax profiline

Would like to try Liros lines. :-)

I think you fly regularly on the beach climax protec or skybond will be better.
LPG better for field less harsh, last longer in my opinion.

I try to get luminous sleeving and leader lines so it's easier to see for skybond and climax.

Ian.

I'm getting confused about the measure of strength of lines.

Some places measure it in lbs (pounds), other in Kg, and other in daN.

What is daN?

And why don't the measures in Kg correspond to those in lbs when supposedly they are the same product?

Thanks.

OK, I found what a daN is: decaNewton so 10N = 1 daN = 1Kg (approx)

On the conversion issue, supposedly 90lbs (which is what I'm using) should be 40Kg, but I have sometimes seen spools saying 90lbs / 45Kg :?
