Backspin the Fly

Tue Oct 29, 2013 7:40 am

This is the trick I'm having trouble with at the moment

Fade all good - but can't figure how to do the spins on the SF

I suspect it needs A LOT of slack so that it spins rather than do a lat roll?

Add a small amount of weight to the lower spreader connectors on the leading edge.

Do I really need to? - The SF is undoubtedly capable of hitting a backspin

Im just wondering what I can do on my part to improve my technique

No you don't, however, it will help you to begin with. When you have mastered it with the weight, you can then reduce the weight or remove it completely.

Hmmm...good point...I'll try that...

On a related note - I was pulling off massive amounts of multi-lazys

Can anyone clarify if the Fly requires a pop or strong pull?

Cos I've tried both and I still only do a lat roll

Can you backspin other kites? I don't think there is anything unusual about the bs on the SF. Multilazies require more precise timing and slack-giving - if you want to do more than three or four - but backspins are very forgiving.

Clearly this isn't your experience though :)

When you say lat roll, do you mean half a backspin and it comes back into upwards flight? If so, it's probably a slack problem.

Input wing a little dipped / further away before first rotation?
Full slack with non-input hand? (It shouldn't touch the kite at all - you can drop the non-input strap and backspin indefinitely.)
Fairly soft, short input?
Stroll/lope/run forward, wind dependent?
For a 2.1m kite, the SF demands quite a lot of slack. Try more slack / be more gentle.

Good luck.

Ok - a much more gentle input combined with massive slack

Will try

No - I've never been able to backspin yet on anything else

When I say multi lazy - I mean flopping the kite into a turtle and beginning a series of lazy Susan's- but perhaps I'm using wrong terminology???

Hmm, perhaps not massive slack (that's multiple yoyos or wapdowap cascade!), just *more*. This tutorial spells it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vu0fgSWN2TY

Notice how the flyer lets the popping wing drop a touch before starting the rotation (at 10 seconds), then walks forward (he is in fairly low wind there).

That example of a BS keeps altitude nicely - doing the same with a multilazy requires precision timing (and low wind).

I finally pulled it off - albeit without a lot of control

It certainly doent spin as flat as Id like either -

I focused on a good amount of slack on the off hand and gave a short pop and slack with the input hand - was able to hit two spins before it backed out ended

So now I know whats required - cheers everyone :)

... and remember to walk forward! I usually do one step per line pop, varying the length of step depending on wind strength

some people advise that the pull to start the rotation is a bit like starting a petrol lawnmower, try a pull that starts slow but ends up fast, and is definitely a pull and not a pop.

Seems to work on most kites ...... can bit overdoing things a bit if you really wanted a rotation for a BS casdade of a jacobs ladder ....

All we've got is an electric strimmer,so I've got no chance. :(

Well - after trying my 'method' it seems the one that works is a sharp pull

OK, hope that is working.

I want to debunk this "lawnmower pull" that raises its head every now and again. There is nothing in trick kiting that works like this. The simile suggests a very large, very aggressive input and is totally misleading.

A better simile that comes up is "imagine a banana on the end of the string, that you want to bring as close to yourself as possible but you can only move your hand five inches". Even that seems aggressive to me. If something isn't working, you aren't giving slack nicely. Forget about the input. Definitely forget about starting a lawnmower.

i think the important bit is that it's a pull that starts slow and gets faster -not that you are trying to pull the kite out of the sky ........
