The Quantum and Hypnotist are Ok for learning on as they are strong but they are also heavy and need at least 5/6 mph (6-10kph) to fly. Below this you need a more specialised kite. Generally an Ultralight will fly from around 3mph to 10 mph and a SUL from below 3mph to maybe 7-8 mph. Because these kites are lightly built, specialist kites they are often expensive as they use special light fabrics and expensive lightweight frames.

There are some cheaper light wind kites - Prism 4D - But I've heard this can be hard to trick. HQ have a range of lightweight kites with 3 new ones this year. I have a Shadow which will fly down to just over 1mph to 8mph and is pretty tough but it costs £150. They have a new kite called the Stratus which seems to be a budget version of the Shadow with a ripstop sail and the frame made from much cheaper 4mm and 5mm rods. HQ say it is quite tricky but I have not seen any tests on it yet but it might be worth looking at if you are on a budget. Just checked on the German kite sites and the price seems to be around 80 euros.

As you have just started flying I would stay away from SULs for the time being. They often require a much different flying technique which I personally find frustrating. A couple of suggestions.

The Prism Zephyr is not an UL kite but will fly in a much lower wind range than your Hypno. You can pick these up cheap and they are quite strong. So from that respect it fits your criteria.

However if I was to recommend one kite to you it would have to be a Jest Of Eve Talon UL. It is a magnifiscent kite but well worth the extra money. That said they are as rare as rocking horse shit in the second hand market as are most Talons so I dont know where you will get one from.

The Deep Space standard flies well in low wind if you take off the tail weight and remove the upper spreader (an easy job, the tailweight is attached with velcro to the bottom of the spine), has very nice flight characteristics, and is a very capable trick machine. Plus it is tough as old boots - I've been trying to break mine for years and not managed it yet.

Of course there is the Deep Space UL too, which is also really nice, and you can do the same trick to further extend it's wind range by removing the tailweight and upper spreader to put the kite in SUL territory. The UL frame is lighter, so probably more breakable - I have manged to break a lower spreader on mine once, but I really should have been flying the standard in that wind...

Both are top quality kites and built to last - keep your eyes peeled in the "for sale" section, as they do come up for sale occasionally, or treat yourself and get a nice shiny new one in your choice of colours from Tim
