Looking to buy a new UL

Fri Nov 04, 2011 12:46 am

I'm new to this forum and need some info. Not really getting much info on the GWTW forum.
I'm looking to buy a new UL , and need some input on a few kites.
1) Black Pearl UL
2) JJF UL
3) The Ophidion
I would really appreciate the info

Thanks

First of all: What kites (STD) do you fly or like?

The Black Pearl UL is a great kite. Not very easy to learn new tricks on, because slackmanagement has to be quit accurate (too much slack and you'll lose the kite). But very quick Yoyo's, good Multilazys and not too hard Tazmachines. Stable Fade. (Movie? Here: http://vimeo.com/27473113.)
Light kite (2PT ULE), I never got a Yofade or CrazyCopter out of it (I assume because of the light ULE).

I don't have much airtime with a JJF UL, but it a very capable kite. Smaller than a BP, but a bit more forgiving and robust.

Never flown a Ophidion.

And I won't be surprised that a Deepspace UL or a Talon UL would be recommenend on this side of the ocean. With good reason, of course.

Hope that helps,
Krijn

See if you can get a go on an Exile UL - beautiful kite.

I fly a Zephyer and a Nirvana SUL
I like the Zephyer but theirs something about it seems a little heavy and slugish at times.
I really like my Nirvana very smooth kite.
Seems like Night and Day between the two.
The Euro kites seem like a much better quality kite.

R-Sky and quality are two words that don't always go together. On the other hand Blue Moon kites are about as good as it gets from a quality point of view.

I've only ever flown the Standard versions of the three kites you mention, so can't really comment on the pros and cons of the ULs.

I'd probably say that the Ophidion is the most fun to fly, but the JJF is the least idiosynchratic.

In terms of build quality, the Ophidion is better than the L1s, which in turn will be at least as good as your Nirvana.

If you really want to go for build quality I'd suggest either the Talon or DS ULs (which are about as good as it gets and are sweet kites) or go for Roy's suggestion of a Blue Moon (not that I've ever seen one in the flesh).

+1 on the DS UL recommendations, and it flies really nicely without the tailweight too, which means just a little extra low wind range if you need it
