Re: HQ Shadow - Problems on maiden flight

All the old Shadows were rainbow, all the 2009 ones are blue. HQ do show a small difference in standoff lengths between the two but not much, may be because the new one uses the new screw on fittings.

( Just to really confuse you after they discontinued the original Shadow but before they re released the 2009 Shadow, they made a small one off batch of purple motif ones that all went to the USA!) :?

Your only chance of getting one is if you were very very lucky at the swap/meet on 'The Other Place'.

DSUL?
I've come to terms with lots of acronyms since I came to Fractured Axel. Bought a kite from AWOC. Know about LEs and SLEs and EXPs.
UL = Ultra-Light?
SUL = Super-Ultra-Light? Or Somewhat-Ultra-Lightish?
But DSUL? Definitely Super Ultra Light? Don't Stand Under Landing-point? Demi-semi-ultra-light? Diamond-shaped and unloved?
OK, I think I'm ready to be told ...

:lol: :lol: :lol: .....Just thought with you being a diehard Benson flier.... ;)

That Shadow looks like a decent kite, I think you'll enjoy it. Maybe with all these folks buying 'em we should start a 'Shadow section'.

Right, Call me a daft old nerd, but I'm going back to the 'Shadow' or 'Shadow 2009' question.
Mine looks just like the top one in Steve's Aug 2 post, which he labels 'Shadow 2009'.
HQ says the fabric of the Shadow 2009 is Icarex. I'm no expert, but I'd say the fabric of my Shadow looks/feels very much like the fabric of my Rev 1.5 SLE, which I believe is Icarex. For the 'Shadow', the HQ site says the fabric is Ventex Light.
However, HQ are very specific about the standoffs. 'Shadow 2009' standoffs are supposed to be only 21.5 cm long (8.46 ins), but mine definitely measure 22.5 cm (8.86ins) from tip to Icarex. That's correct for the 'Shadow'. And yes, they are the screw-on type.

So on balance, I'm prepared to accept that my Shadow is probably the 'Shadow 2009' but with the wrong standoffs.
In which case, should I have made the uphauls 42.5cm instead of 46.5cm? Or 44.5 cm?
It's flying rather nicely now, btw - plenty of drive, and I'm not noticing oversteer.

[added edit] The purple's OK. Different, yes, but imho not better.

You daft old nerd,are you measuring yer 'Stans' right?
I'm 95% certain (and it's a while since I ever looked at mine) that the length given is just the carbon bit not including any grabbers or end-caps.

When the original Shadow came out - 2006?- ventrex light was the ultralight fabric of choice. This has now been largely replace by Icarex PC31 and the new Shadow is made of Icarex. I've just measured my standoff and I get 22cm! and mine is definately a 2009 if fact I'm pretty sure it was the first 2009 Shadow actually delivered to a customer in the UK ( long story). I wouldn't worry too much about the standoffs, unless it has a Rainbow motif it's one of the new ones. As such, the official set up is:-

Uphaul - 42.5cm
Outhaul - 52cm
Inhaul - 56cm
Turbo - 6cm

That said, if it's flying OK, has plenty of drive and isn't oversteering then you've obviously got it set up pretty well so I wouldn't worry if your measurements are slightly different unless you get any more problems.

BTW, Gaz ( StinkFinger) has a thing about Purple!
