Axel

The Axel is for many trick flyers a real mile stone in the development of their skills and regarded by most as the first "propper trick" they learned. During an Axel a kite which is flying parallel to the ground is made to turn upwards and make a 360 degree flat rotation with the kite belly parallel to the ground. The Axel is an awsome trick, i know when i first learned to axel i spent weeks doing nothing else ! The Axel looks different done with different kites some spin in a slow, floaty manner whilst others are much faster and more manic, some kites will axel very flat and dead parallel to the ground whlist other will tend to axel with the nose cocked upwards slightly. with practice double and even triple rotations can be achieved from a single move or with alot of practice and perfect timing as the kite rotates around the line can be popped again and again leading to the crazyist multiple axels imaginable....

There are several ways of learning to axel, i will endevour to explain two. Once again flying across the window from left to right, do a SNAP STALL, as the kite stalls and the wing tips become parallel to the ground feed the left hand and a split second later pop the right hand and return both hands to the neutral position. The pop on the right hand will initiate the rotation. It is likely that you will need to move forward wilst the kite rotates to give plenty of slack line, this enables the kite to complete the rotation with no pressure on the lines and reduces the chance of the dreaded WING TIP WRAP how far and how fast you will need to move will depending upon wind speed and location in the window, as with most tricks it is easier to learn to Axel at the edges of the window.
